A vintage CDG skirt, this one is from 1992 Spring collection, titled “Unfinished”.
Rei Kawakubo’s Spring 1992 show was an unqualified romp. Titled “Unfinished,” it featured a riot of references including the folksy Chinese florals you see on this piece. Kawakubo “created a primitive feeling on jackets, trenches, and dresses with exposed linings, torn-off collars, and missing sleeves,” noted Vogue. The designer’s rationale? “I wanted to go back to the beginning and show that the finished product isn’t what’s interesting anymore,” she said. “When clothes are in the middle of construction, then there’s always the question of what comes next.”
This skirt offers a mismatched panelling pulled together to create the shape of it. Elastic waisted, it can be worn low on the hips for a more dramatic drop, or hhigher on the waist. The rounded hemlines of the skirt are not evenly symmetrical, creating an alluring drop around the ankles.
